Phonics, Reading Second grade at Boxford Academy continues with the strong phonics-based, language arts program of first grade. The difference is that second graders handle multi-syllable words, read longer sentences and are exposed to smaller print. There are seven book-size readers plus the Bible reader for this age level. Spelling and penmanship lessons follow the same sequence as the phonics lessons so the reinforcement and practice is thorough. Reading comprehension skills need to be strengthened at this level.
