At Boxford Academy, each Wednesday is set aside to pursue another type of learning. In an effort to develop the whole student, we set aside our academic textbooks and spend the day cultivating an appreciation of the fine arts, as well engaging in physical education and unit studies that provide for in-depth study of subjects that vary from model rocket building to ancient cultures.
Art
Using a variety of media, students will gain skills in creative expression. Through skilled instruction, students will be exposed to proper techniques and use of colors and textures. The emphasis is on maximizing individual confidence and skill while encouraging personal expression.
Music & Choir
All students participate in music classes that provide broad music appreciation and instruction in the fundamentals of music. Students perform music for the Christmas and Promotion Day programs, as well as other school events.
Physical Education
Students participate in a variety of sports instruction and are even exposed to sports from other countries. The emphasis is on participation and fun. We strive to realize the following goals:
-
To establish healthy habits, including hygiene, nutrition, and exercise;
-
To know and follow simple rules of safety;
-
To enjoy physical recreation and activity;
-
To learn habits of good sportsmanship and fair play; and
-
To develop better coordination and motor skills.
Unit Studies
On Wednesday afternoon, all students participate in Unit Studies. These studies last approximately four weeks and give students an opportunity to develop new talents, gain new skills, or study specific subjects at an in-depth level.
